Growing cannabis at home - Beginners guide

Growing cannabis at home is not as complicated as you may think. If you are new to growing cannabis or simply a hobby gardener and want to grow your own weed avoiding the expense of purchasing pricey growing equipment the perfect place to start is growing cannabis in your own garden, terrace, conservatory or greenhouse using a free source of energy - natural light. A greenhouse is the perfect solution to grow outdoors as they are specifically designed for growing plants and placed correctly in your garden can optimise your crop. If you already have a greenhouse this is ideal otherwise you could create or build a polytunnel or purchase a pop up greenhouse or grow house at very little cost. If you don't have a greenhouse or space for the aforementioned choose a sunny area of your terrace or garden that gives plenty of natural light source. We recommend growing your cannabis plants in pots as they can be moved around easily from shady spots to more sunny areas if you're not south facing or on occasion’s shelter to avoid any rainfall that could damage buds causing mould and mildew especially toward the end of flowering as you are open to nature’s elements. You can also be exposed to insects and pests when growing outdoors if you spot any pests on your plants evict them quickly as they could potentially harm your crop.

Selecting seeds

When it comes to selecting seeds there are 1000's to choose from they are offered in the following formats: Regular, feminised, fast/early photoperiod and autoflowering strains. With so many strains out there making the right selection can be daunting but when it comes to beginner strains there is no simpler place to start than autoflowering seeds. Autoflowering cannabis seeds do exactly that. They flower automatically and grow with little or no complications requiring no change of light hours and they can achieve some amazing results in an average of 75 days from seed to harvest. In addition photoperiod strains as well as light hours they also require hours of uninterrupted darkness whereas autoflower strains do not and are are not affected by light pollution or near-by neighbouring lighting so you can enjoy late summer night bbq's in your garden without having to cook in the dark!

Time to sow

Whether you grow photoperiod or autoflower strains you should sow your seeds in a quality medium around April May or when the last frost and adverse weather has passed depending on your location. Sowing seeds when there is still a chance of low temperatures or frost can harm your seedlings. Of course, you could start your seedlings off indoor for protection against the elements and if you are growing autoflowering seeds you could achieve 2 to 3 harvests per cycle from April to November. When its time to sow many outdoor gardeners follow an ancient tradition the luna calendar and use the moon phases to sow and harvest their crops. For that reason Original Sensible Seeds provide a yearly downloadable online lunar calendar so you can refer to the appropriate time to sow and harvest your seeds plus, for a limited period we offer a magnetic version which we send free to our customers.
